What did it leave you with?

The story

Nobody around me played anything. I didn’t learn this, I just kept ending up in it, and for years I couldn’t have told you where it came from. Eventually I stopped needing to know.

Is there something you’ve always been pulled towards that nothing in your upbringing explains? Do you need the reason for it, or is it enough that it’s yours?

Lyrics

(soft, almost under breath)
who am I…
who am I…

Didn't grow up round man that played this
Still found rhythm in it somehow
Late nights, low light, headphones
Didn't say much, just sat down

Didn't know what half of it meant
Couldn't tell you where it's from
Just knew when the drums come in
Something in me wakes up

Started clocking how they say things
Not the words — just how it sits
There's a weight in every sentence
Like it comes from somewhere lived

I weren't trying to fit no image
Didn't force it, didn't plan
Just press play and let it run
Now it's sitting in my hands

who am I…
who am I…

(backs: who am I…)

who am I…
who am I…

I hear it when the rhythm hits
Yeah it feels like mine

who am I…
who am I…

Didn't learn it, still I live it
Now it's in my line

(backs, wider: who am I… who am I…)

Now I'm hearing things different
Little pauses, little shifts
How they ride it, how they lean
How they let the silence sit

It ain't loud but it's saying something
You can feel it in the tone
Like it's deeper than the track
Like it's lived before the song

I ain't claiming I know all of it
Still picking bits apart
But I know when something lands
Cos it lands straight in my chest

Didn't come from where it started
Still it found me where I am
Now it's shaping how I move
I didn't plan it — but I can

who am I…
who am I…

(backs: who am I…)

who am I…
who am I…

I hear it when the rhythm hits
Yeah it feels like mine

who am I…
who am I…

Didn't learn it, still I live it
Now it's in my line

(backs layered: who am I… who am I…)

Maybe I don't need to trace it
Don't need names for where it's from

Maybe it's enough I feel it
Every time that it comes on

(pause)

I hear it…
and I don't question it now

who am I…
who am I…

who am I…
who am I…

I hear it when the rhythm hits
Yeah it feels like mine

who am I…
who am I…

Didn't learn it, still I live it
Now it's in my line

(backs, widest here: who am I… who am I…)

(soft, fading)
who am I…
who am I…
